Working from home as an entrepreneur—whether you're an artist, crafter, author, or voice actor—often means long hours spent alone in your workspace. While this solitude can foster deep focus and creativity, it can also become isolating. The importance of stepping out of the home office, or in my case, the recording booth, and engaging with like-minded professionals cannot be overstated. Consistently meeting new people and forming relationships is key to not only personal well-being but also professional growth. Opportunities flourish when you connect with others who share your entrepreneurial spirit, and these relationships often lead to new projects, collaborations, and valuable insights.

In today's digital world, platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook have revolutionized the way entrepreneurs find work. These tools allow independent business owners to showcase their talents, attract clients, and market their services to a vast audience. Online networking has made it possible for many of us to reach global markets, land contracts, and establish successful businesses from the comfort of our homes. However, while digital outreach is convenient and effective, it comes with its own set of challenges. Online interactions can sometimes feel transactional, and without the depth of in-person connections, trust and long-term loyalty can be harder to build. Algorithms change, social media trends shift, and an entrepreneur who relies solely on online marketing may find themselves at the mercy of unpredictable digital landscapes.
This is why in-person events are so important. Engaging with local entrepreneurial communities and attending networking events can make a significant difference in the longevity of a business. Events like Arizona State University’s "Authorpreneurship" offer a rare and valuable opportunity to connect with other creatives in a meaningful way. The program has already welcomed over 400 writers, offering them a platform to grow their businesses and learn from experienced professionals. As highlighted in the article "From Pen to Profit: Meet Arizona’s Thriving Author-preneurs," the initiative provides authors with essential skills to bridge the gap between creativity and entrepreneurship. You can read the whole article here, including links to some of the wonderful business owners featured in the above photo!
Ultimately, the key to a thriving independent business is balancing both digital and in-person engagement. While social media and online platforms remain powerful tools for outreach, nothing replaces the depth and trust built through face-to-face interactions. I am so grateful to Arizona State University’s J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute for creating spaces where local entrepreneurs can connect, learn, and grow together. These opportunities not only strengthen our businesses but also build lasting communities of support and inspiration.
